Job Description
Executive Pastor
(Full-time, Exempt - Pastoral)
Valley Bible Church (www.valleybiblechurch.org) is a growing, elder-led church in White River Junction, Vermont with approximately 230 weekly attendees. We are an evangelical, baptistic, complementarian church committed to making disciples through expository preaching, biblical community, and gospel-centered ministry. Located in the Upper Valley along the Connecticut River, our church serves communities in both Vermont and New Hampshire.
We are seeking a gifted Executive Pastor who loves developing leaders, equipping volunteers, and helping ministries flourish. This pastor will partner closely with the Senior Pastor to strengthen discipleship, care for our church family, and provide strategic leadership for staff and ministry teams.
The Executive Pastor reports to the Senior Pastor. Direct Reports: Pastor/Director of Youth Ministry, Pastor/Director of Children’s Ministry, Office Manager.
Purpose:
Advance the disciple-making mission of Valley Bible Church by championing a culture of discipleship and leadership development, sharing in the shepherding of the church, and giving the Senior Pastor bandwidth for preaching and vision.
Key Responsibilities:
Leader of Staff & Volunteer Teams
- Lead weekly staff huddle (spiritual focus + tactical wins)
- Establish annual ministry goals, provide regular coaching, and conduct written performance reviews for every direct report
Leader of Groups ministry
- Cultivate excellent and growing groups ministry (currently Sunday Groups, Community Groups, Men's & Women's Bible Studies)
- Recruit, equip, coach, and care for ministry leaders (leader of leaders)
- Host regular leadership-development opportunities
- Oversee curriculum selection and safeguard biblical doctrine.
Steward Execution of Discipleship Pathway
- Provide stewardship of the church's disciple-making pathway.
- Ensure clear processes from assimilation of visitors, Introduction to Christianity, Baptism, Membership, and connection into groups, roles of service, and leadership.
General Pastoral Duties
- Share regularly in the preaching ministry (approx. once per month), with additional
- opportunities during holidays and summer.
- Share in weekly Sunday platform duties (e.g. welcome/pastoral prayer)
- Lead weekly prayer meeting (or delegate)
- Visitation and Counseling of congregants as needed
- Conduct Weddings and Funerals as assigned
Next-Generation Oversight
- Supervise Pastor/Directors of Youth Ministry & Children’s Ministry;
- Approve calendars, budgets, and ensure safety compliance
Strategic & Financial Alignment
- Translate elder priorities into ministry plans
- Facilitate annual budget process in conjunction with Treasurer
Skills, Knowledge and Experience:
- Excellent verbal, written, and up-front communication skills;
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
- A self-starter with the ability to work independently and with others to meet deadlines
- Excellent technology skills, e.g. Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and Planning Center (or comparable church management software)
- Demonstrated ability to teach and apply Scripture in an engaging and effective manner.
Qualifications:
- A follower of Jesus with a strong personal commitment to doctrine, mission, and vision of Valley Bible Church
- Meets the biblical qualifications for an elder (1 Tim 3; Titus 1)
- Seminary degree or equivalent training preferred
- At least five years of ministry leadership experience with demonstrated effectiveness in making disciples, developing leaders, and leading healthy ministry teams.
- Warm, relational presence; coachable, able to inspire other leaders.
- Applicants will be subjected to a criminal background check.
Compensation
- Salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with education and ministry experience.
- Additional provisions for ministry expenses, auto reimbursement allowance, professional development, and pastoral sabbaticals.
