Job Description

Summary of Position:

The Communications Director is responsible for overseeing and executing all church-wide communication efforts to ensure people are informed, connected, and engaged with the mission and ministry of FBC Umatilla. This role provides leadership, vision, and strategy for messaging, branding, digital communication, and creative media across all platforms. The Communications Director leads the Communications Ministry and Creative Team, ensuring clarity, consistency, and excellence in how the story of what God is doing at FBCU is communicated. This position requires a strong blend of leadership, creativity, organization, and ministry-minded communication. The Communications Director serves not only as a strategic leader but also as a shepherd to those serving on the Communications and Creative Teams.

Oversight:

The Communications Director reports to Church Leadership and works closely with pastoral staff, ministry leaders, worship, production, and volunteers to align all communication with the vision and values of FBC Umatilla.

Principal Job Responsibilities:

Communications Strategy & Vision

  • Lead and execute a clear, church-wide communication strategy aligned with the mission and values of FBC Umatilla.
  • Establish communication standards, timelines, and workflows for effective ministry communication.
  • Ensure consistent messaging and branding across all ministries and platforms.
  • Evaluate communication effectiveness and adjust strategies to maximize clarity, engagement, and impact.
  • Coordinate communication plans for major events, sermon series, seasonal initiatives, and special campaigns.

Digital & Print Communications

  • Oversee all digital platforms, including the FBCU and Orphan’s Rock websites, social media, email newsletters, and text/app communications.
  • Ensure websites and event pages remain accurate, current, and function as the central communication hub.
  • Approve, prioritize, and design content and graphics to maintain clarity, consistency, and visual excellence while avoiding overcommunication.
  • Creation and distribution of printed materials such as flyers, signage, and seasonal publications.

Creative & Media Oversight

  • Creation and direction of visual storytelling using graphics, photography, and video.
  • Supervise and collaborate with the Creative Team to capture high-quality visual and media content.
  • Ensure visual media supports clear messaging, brand consistency, and ministry engagement.
  • Support Sunday service communication elements, including stage announcements, seasonal graphics/themes, and “Commons” visuals.
  • Design custom video thumbnails for YouTube and digital platforms.
  • Oversee equipment, software, and workflows related to communications and creative media.

General Skills & Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's Degree is preferred, or alternatively, an equivalent of four to eight years of work experience in a related field.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to manage time effectively and multitask as required.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Products, Canva, DaVinci, Propresenter, and Planning Center is required, as well as an aptitude to learn new software and systems.
  • Assist with budgeting and planning for communications-related resources.
  • Stay up-to-date with emerging trends, software, and technologies to match the present and future communication needs of the Church and Ministries.
  • Should be able to work both independently and as a team player.
  • Additionally, a mature and ongoing personal relationship with Jesus Christ is important.
  • The candidate should be able to fully embrace the vision and values of FBC Umatilla and must either be a member or willing to become a member of FBC Umatilla upon employment.

General Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the job's essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:

  • Sit/stand for long periods
  • Occasionally kneel or crouch and be comfortable in small spaces or extreme heights.
  • The employee must frequently lift or move up to 25 lbs. and occasionally lift or move up to 50 lbs.
